The detention officer position supervises and controls all persons brought into the Police Department under the custody of the Doraville Police Department. The detention officer’s primary function is the safety and security of all Police Department employees and persons in custody of the Police Department. Work involves the interaction with persons in custody to ensure that the proper booking/identification procedures are adhered to. The position also monitors all persons in custody awaiting transfer out of the Police Department to another agency, to court, or released on bond.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of a specific statement from the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Processes persons in custody (arrestees) into the facility; intakes arrestees’ personal property; fingerprints and photographs arrestees; explains bond procedures to arrestees.
  • Supervises and monitors arrestees’ activities inside the facility on a continual basis including providing meals for the arrestees, arranging for medical care, and allowing the arrestees to make telephone calls; conducts/records periodic cell checks; transfers arrestees to/from cells, booking areas, court, or other locations as directed; escorts arrestees from one area of the facility to another.
  • Arranges transport of arrestees to court and medical facilities as needed.
  • Conducts periodic checks to maintain security of the facility, checking door locks and other security devices.
  • Receives, searches and releases arrestees brought into the facility and completes all required paperwork.
  • Supervises and conducts routine cleaning and maintenance activities within the intake and jail areas.
  • Monitors two-way radio traffic; answers telephone calls; directs callers with the appropriate information about the arrestees; responds to callers as appropriate.
  • Prepares various reports in a timely manner.
  • Exercises discretion in the performance of the work and regularly uses independent judgment.

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Skilled in the use of a computer, and oral and written communication.
  • Ability to plan, organize, analyze and make decisions; to maintain complex records, and to prepare reports utilizing these records; to plan, establish, and coordinate priorities.
  • Must be able to accurately forecast future conditions of the jail and to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.
  • Must be able to work effectively with the Mayor, City Council and professional staff members in City government.
  • Answers questions via the telephone about charges and bond information; answers questions for various law enforcement agencies; assists incoming officers with basic information about arrestees.
  • Enforces intake and jail area rules, regulations, policies and procedures; maintains arrestee discipline; maintains a secure and peaceful environment in the facility.
  • Receives, processes and books incoming arrestees; records personal property of each arrestee; conducts interviews to obtain personal information; makes fingerprint and photographic records of incoming arrestees; records arrestee data in computer system and completes required documentation; verifies identification of arrestees; lodges arrestees into cells; provides bedding and toiletries as needed.
  • Conducts release of arrestees per established procedures; completes applicable forms upon release.
  • Dispenses medications, administers first aid, and coordinates medical care per established procedures.
  • Monitors inventory levels of supplies and ensures availability of adequate material to conduct work activities.
  • Operates a personal computer and other general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • Operates the paddy wagon to transfer arrestees as directed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Must have high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Basic Jail Officer certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license and a satisfactory MVR.
  • Must be bondable.

Georgia law 92A-2108, as amended, requires that any person employed in any of the police service classification: (a) be at least 18 years old; (b) be a citizen of the United States; (c) have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent; (d) not have been convicted, by any state or by the federal government, of any crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal or state prison or institution; nor shall he have been convicted of sufficient misdemeanors to establish a pattern of disregard for the law; (e) be fingerprinted and a search made of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record; (f) possess good moral character as determined by investigation under procedures established pursuant to the Act; (g) have an oral interview with the hiring authority or his representative(s) to determine such things as applicant’s appearance, background and ability to communicate; and (h) be found, after examination by a licensed physician or surgeon, to be free from any physical, emotional or mental conditions which might adversely affect his exercising the powers or duties of a peace officer.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-50 pounds).
  • Ability to communicate orally and to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, explosives, water hazards, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
  • Must be able to work various shifts which include working on weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background investigation, to include but not limited to, a physical examination with drug screening and an oral interview.
