An extremely emotional day at Doraville Police Department

On November 14, 2011, at approximately 1:50 in the morning, Doraville Police Dept. received a call of a home invasion in progress.

Officers arrived at the scene promptly and one suspect was taken into custody, while the other suspect fled on foot.

Detective Wilson was the Detective on call and was responding to the home invasion call. At approximately 2:35 AM in-route to the scene Detective Wilson was traveling I-20 WB when he was struck head on by another vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of travel, the other vehicle was driven by Gene Jones 39 years old of Dunwoody and alcohol was a factor in the accident.
 
Detective Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene and Gene Jones was transported to a local hospital. Detective Wilson, full name Robert Shane Wilson 27 years old, began at Doraville Police Dept. as a dispatcher in 2003. In 2007 Detective Wilson became a sworn police officer. In September of this year he was promoted to Detective Corporal.

Detective Wilson is survived by his wife Katy Wilson, son Liam Wilson, mother Gail Hanson, who is a retired DeKalb County Police Officer and Jim Hanson, and Father J. D. Wilson.
