National Police Week will be held in Washington, D. C. from May 9-15, 2010.
This week has been designated National Police Week in honor of all of the law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. It is a week that celebrates their memory and the honor and dignity with which they served. Although we grieve with the surviving families, it is important for them to know that their loss was also our loss. The events that take place in Washington, D. C. allow us all to see that all law enforcement officers are remembered and are thanked for their service and dedication. Law enforcement is more than a profession, it is a calling.
Unfortunately, here in Doraville two of our heroes answered the ultimate call. We lost Capt. Henry Rainey in 1963, and more recently, we suffered the tragic loss of Det. Hugo Arango in 2000. This May 13th marks the 10-year anniversary of Det. Arango’s death. For those of us that were here during that time, it seems like the events happened yesterday, and it is something that will live with us forever. In tribute to Det. Arango, money has been raised so that the Arango family can return to Washington to honor the 10 year anniversary. Several of our officers will be accompanying the Arango family to participate in Police Week. I ask that our community be aware of our law enforcement officers throughout the year, but especially during National Police Week. It is important for our officers to know the sacrifices that they make do not go unnoticed. And for those officers who have answered the ultimate call, they will live in our hearts forever and will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
Blue Ribbon Campaign
During National Police Week (the calendar week that includes May 15), C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors), Inc. encourages the display of blue ribbons on car antennas. Law enforcement personnel are encouraged to tie blue ribbons to cruiser antennas. Citizens are encouraged to tie blue ribbons to their car antennas. These blue ribbons are a visible reminder of law enforcement personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice and in honor of those men and women who serve their communities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year in and year out.
